Nothing, a leading technology company, has made an exciting announcement regarding its upcoming smartphone, dubbed as Phone (2a). The firm has unveiled that its newest device will feature a Dimensity 7200 Pro processor that has been custom-developed in partnership with MediaTek. This bespoke processor is designed to deliver optimal performance and efficient battery usage, to ensure an enhanced user experience.
Under the leadership of Carl Pei, Nothing recently unveiled its plan to launch the Phone (2a). This device is set to be the first in a new line of budget-friendly devices, however, the company assures that it will retain the same level of quality that consumers have come to expect from its products.
In this context, Nothing has confirmed that the Phone (2a) will be powered by the new Dimensity 7200 Pro processor. This chip has been co-developed with MediaTek in order to tailor it to the specific needs of the company’s latest smartphone, thereby ensuring superior performance and usability.
This information was shared by the Head of Product Marketing at Nothing, Raymond Zhu, in a sneak-peek video about the Phone (2a). Zhu provided insights into some of the unique features that this cutting-edge processor will bring to the table.
Zhu explained that the objective of the Phone (2a) is to extend the company’s “unique” design ethos to a larger user base, while also providing “the best possible performance.” To this end, they have selected a chip that guarantees a “fast and fluid” response for multitasking activities “throughout the day.”
Specially, the smartphone will be equipped with the Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset, manufactured by semiconductor specialist TSMC using its second-generation 4 nanometer process technology. The processor features 8 cores and can reach speeds of 2.8GHz CPU all alongside a RAM memory up to 20 GB due to the new RAM Booster technology.
Moreover, the Pro version of the Dimensity 7200 chip has been used as Nothing has been working with MediaTek to ensure seamless hardware/software integration and implement a series of optimizations to enhance smartphone performance.
For instance, they have tweaked the power consumption of certain components such as the display and modem to make them more efficient. This has resulted in approximately 10 percent improvement in energy efficiency, as per Zhu.
In line with this, Nothing’s software team has also developed unique features for the processor, such as ‘smart clean’ which performs a thorough cleanup of the device by reorganizing the files.
This cleanup operation is scheduled to take place when the device is idle and connected to a power source. The aim is to ensure that the smartphone continues to operate as fluidly as it did when it was brand new.
Another enhancement introduced in the processor is its ability to speed up file transfers between the smartphone and Windows computers. Zhu mentioned that such transfers typically aren’t the fastest due to the need for file conversion at the application layer.
However, with the optimization implemented in the Dimensity 7200 Pro, files can be converted directly at kernel level which allows for file transfers to be completed “at double the speed”.
Zhu also clarified that before finalizing the Dimensity 7200 Pro, they had considered two processors developed by Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 7s Gen2 and the 782G. However, according to Zhu, “these did not deliver the same level of performance as the MediaTek chip.”
Specifically, the Snapdragon 782G uses a 6nm manufacturing process, which implies fewer transistors in the chipset and thus, less computational power and energy efficiency. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 does utilize a 4nm manufacturing process, but it is manufactured by Samsung with “a less advanced process” than that used by TSMC.
Nothing is set to unveil the Phone (2a) on Tuesday, March 5 in a special event that will be streamed from its official website at 12:30 p.m. (mainland Spain). The event is themed ‘Fresh. Eyes’, as confirmed by Nothing.
