PM Modi announces renaming of Navy ranks to embrace Indian culture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that Indian Navy ranks will be renamed to reflect the country’s culture, during a Navy Day event in Malvan, Maharashtra. In his speech, PM Modi emphasized his government’s commitment to increasing the number of women in the armed forces. He paid tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a 17th-century Maratha king known for his vision and naval warfare strategy, highlighting the importance of naval power. PM Modi also praised the Navy for appointing a woman officer to command a Naval ship.

Furthermore, PM Modi disclosed that the applets worn by naval officers will now feature a reflection of Chhatrapati Shivaji, who is credited with establishing India’s first modern Navy. He stated that India has drawn inspiration from Shivaji and left behind the mentality of slavery, progressing on all fronts. India is setting ambitious targets for itself and utilizing its full potential to achieve those goals, PM Modi added.

The prime minister also mentioned that India is being seen as a ‘Vishwa Mitra’ (universal friend) by the world. He highlighted India’s support for port-led development and the encouragement of merchant shipping, stating that the country is moving towards leveraging the potential of its oceans.

Before the Navy Day event, PM Modi unveiled a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg district. He then witnessed an “operational demonstration” by Indian Navy ships, submarines, aircraft, and Special Forces at Tarkarli beach. The display showcased the Navy’s prowess, with the participation of warships, submarines, helicopters, and various aircraft.

Among the warships involved in the drill were INS Vikramaditya, INS Kolkata, INS Kochi, INS Visakhapatnam, INS Chennai, INS Brahmputra, INS Beas, INS Betwa, INS Tabar, INS Subhadra, INS Vinash, and INS Vipul. The Navy also deployed submarine Khanderi, helicopters Chetak, Kamov 32, Seakind 42B, and Dornier, as well as P8I surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, Light Combat Aircraft, and Mig29K.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi extended greetings on Navy Day, commending the navy personnel’s dedication to duty and love for the nation.
