PM Modi Approves Rs 561 Crore for Chennai Flood Management Project

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the go-ahead for the first urban flood mitigation project in Chennai, with an allocation of Rs 561.29 crore for “Integrated Urban Flood Management” activities in the Chennai Basin project, according to Home Minister Amit Shah.

This decision comes as Chennai grapples with the devastating aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, which has left the city submerged in water and emphasized the urgent need for improved flood prevention measures.

In a tweet, Mr. Shah acknowledged the recurring floods in Chennai and the increasing instances of metropolitan cities experiencing excessive rainfall and sudden flooding. He praised PM Modi’s proactive approach in approving the flood management project.

The project, funded under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF), includes central assistance of Rs 500 crore. The first installment of Rs 450 crore has already been released to the state, with the second installment released today, according to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Following an aerial survey and a high-level meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Singh confirmed the release of funds and emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the waterlogging crisis in Chennai.

The impact of Cyclone Michuang has severely affected daily life in Chennai, with floodwaters paralyzing the city’s streets and suburbs. Many residents are stranded in their homes, unable to carry out their usual activities.

Chennai, along with Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, bore the brunt of Cyclone Michuang as it made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast. The city continues to face the challenges posed by the torrential rainfall and subsequent flooding.

The approval of the flood management project by PM Modi is a significant step towards mitigating the impact of floods in Chennai and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
