New court documents have provided more information about the alleged murder of a woman in her Bloomington home. According to the documents, police were called to the residence on E. State Road 45 in Monroe County at around 1:30 a.m. on November 4th after a neighbor reported hearing a man yelling outside.
Upon arrival, officers discovered 34-year-old Bryce Michael Leighton outside the house with blood on his hands and clothes. Leighton was reportedly shouting about his “baby.” Inside the garage, deputies found 48-year-old Tara Langley lying on the floor, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police observed a significant amount of blood around Langley’s head, and a black AR-15-style rifle was found on the ground. Leighton was taken into custody for questioning, during which he appeared “hysterical and hard to understand.” When asked about the events, Leighton claimed to be experiencing flashbacks and began sobbing, repeatedly saying, “My baby, oh God.”
Leighton explained to the police that he was trying to leave the house because Langley had become aggressive when intoxicated. He stated that they had been dating for seven years, and Langley’s behavior had become increasingly violent over the past few months. Leighton claimed that he was packing his belongings when Langley approached him, ignoring his warnings to stay away, despite having a taser in her hand.
According to court documents, Leighton recalled that once Langley activated the stun gun, everything became a blur. He admitted to having the gun in his possession during the altercation. Following the interview, Leighton was taken to the hospital, and a search warrant was executed at the crime scene.
Investigators discovered blood droplets throughout the garage, smeared stains on the door frame, and a considerable amount of blood from the floor to the ceiling. They also found a spent rifle near Langley’s body, as well as a stun gun nearby. An autopsy for Langley was scheduled for November 6th.
Inside the house, investigators noted a state of disarray, with broken furniture, appliances, and glass scattered throughout. Leighton has been charged with murder, and an initial hearing is scheduled for November 7th at 1 p.m.
