Possible lead poisoning in recalled snack products causes illness in children

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of a line of children’s snack products due to potential risks of lead poisoning. WanaBana USA, the manufacturer, is voluntarily recalling its WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée pouches after reports of elevated levels of lead in some units of the product. Lead is a toxic substance that can have detrimental health effects, especially for children and individuals with certain health conditions.

The FDA emphasizes the importance of preventing children’s exposure to lead, as it can have long-term health impacts. In some cases, lead exposure may not immediately show obvious symptoms. Therefore, parents of children who have consumed these products are advised to consult their healthcare provider for a blood test, as it is the only way to identify lead poisoning. Some symptoms to watch out for include headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, and anemia.

Individuals who have been exposed to lead over an extended period may experience symptoms such as irritability, lethargy, fatigue, muscle aches, occasional abdominal discomfort, constipation, difficulty concentrating, headache, tremors, and weight loss.

The WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée pouches were distributed nationwide through retail locations and online sales sites. The product was sold in three-pack containers of 2.5 ounces. A complete list of the affected batches and units can be found on the FDA’s website.

The FDA reports that four people have already become ill due to possible exposure to the recalled products. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has launched an investigation into the fruit pouches to identify the source of the lead contamination.
