Rahul Dravid Commits to Team India, Extends Coaching Contract

Indian men’s cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid and his support staff have been given contract extensions by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Dravid’s two-year contract concluded after the Cricket World Cup 2023, where India reached the final but lost to Australia. Despite receiving offers from various Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, Dravid decided to continue his role as the head coach of the national team. His first assignment after the contract renewal will be the tour of South Africa.

In a release, the BCCI stated, “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announces the extension of contracts for Head Coach Mr. Rahul Dravid and the Support Staff of Team India (Senior Men).” The BCCI engaged in productive discussions with Dravid and unanimously agreed to extend his tenure after the conclusion of his previous contract following the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

The BCCI acknowledged Dravid’s instrumental role in shaping the Indian team and praised his exceptional professionalism. The board also expressed appreciation for VVS Laxman’s contributions as the Head of the National Cricket Academy and as the stand-in Head Coach. Dravid and Laxman have worked closely together, similar to their legendary on-field partnerships, to drive Indian cricket forward.

BCCI President Roger Binny expressed no concerns about Dravid’s contract renewal. Binny commended Dravid’s vision, professionalism, and relentless efforts, which have been crucial to Team India’s success. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the Head Coach and highlighted the strategic guidance provided by Dravid, which has led to the team’s commendable performances. Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary of the BCCI, also praised Dravid’s commitment to excellence. Shah attributed Team India’s formidable performance in all three formats and their top ranking to Dravid’s vision, guidance, and roadmap for the team. He commended the Head Coach for creating the right platform for the team to flourish, particularly during their extraordinary World Cup campaign where they won 10 consecutive games before the final. Shah assured Dravid of the board’s full support and commitment to sustained success at the international level.
