Ranbir Kapoor’s latest film, “Animal,” has received mixed reviews for its excessive length, violence, and toxic relationships. Written, directed, and edited by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film is a relentless father-son action drama that rarely pauses for breath. The story revolves around a boy’s intense adoration for his wealthy industrialist father, who fails to reciprocate his affection. The film is nearly three and a half hours long, which is one of the reasons why it is considered exhausting. It bombards the audience with unrelenting violence, with the protagonist spilling blood and killing numerous people to protect his family’s business from a conspiracy. Even in love, there is no room for subtleties, as the protagonist demands unwavering allegiance from his love interest, Geetanjali.
Geetanjali, played by Rashmika Mandanna, lacks agency and willingly follows the protagonist’s lead, even when it goes against her parents’ wishes. The film’s antagonist, played by Bobby Deol, is equally ruthless and bloodthirsty, engaging in a deadly feud with the protagonist. Both characters are physically impaired, serving as a metaphor for their mental scars.
Despite its shortcomings, the film’s background music stands out as a positive element. The action sequences are accompanied by folk songs, adding an interesting contrast to the gratuitous violence. However, the overall experience of “Animal” is tiresome and off-putting, leaving viewers questioning the purpose of its deafening chaos.
