RCB Legend Advocates for Veteran Captain to Replace Hardik Pandya at Gujarat Titans

Shubman Gill Appointed as Captain of Gujarat Titans for IPL 2024

Shubman Gill, a key member of the Gujarat Titans franchise, has been given the role of captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. This is a significant responsibility for Gill, who has shown great potential as a player. However, former Royal Challengers Bangalore star AB de Villiers believes that another experienced player could have been given the opportunity to lead the team.

De Villiers expressed his thoughts on his YouTube channel, stating, “Not that I doubt Shubman’s skill or ability as a leader, but when I saw Kane Williamson’s name as a retained player in the Gujarat Titans, I thought it was a fantastic opportunity to give an experienced player, who has done it before and has a solid role in the team, the chance to captain. It would have allowed Shubman Gill to focus on cementing himself in all formats of Indian cricket and have another successful season at the IPL.”

While De Villiers acknowledges that Gill’s appointment may pay off, he believes it would have been beneficial for Gill to have the opportunity to learn and prepare for the captaincy role in the future. Nonetheless, De Villiers is excited to see Gill perform and lead from the front.

This will be Gill’s first experience captaining an IPL side. He made his IPL debut in 2018 with the Kolkata Knight Riders before joining the Gujarat Titans in 2022. Gill expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, “I have learned a lot from great leaders I have played under, and those experiences will help me in this IPL. I am surrounded by experienced players like Kane Williamson, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, David Miller, and Wriddhiman Saha, who I can learn a lot from.”

Gill has previous captaincy experience, having served as the vice-captain of the India U-19 team during the 2018 World Cup. He was also named captain of India Blue in the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy, India C in the Deodhar Trophy, and India-A during the New Zealand tour in 2019.

Gill’s appointment as captain brings new challenges and responsibilities, including commitment, discipline, hard work, and loyalty. However, he is confident that his previous experiences and the guidance of his teammates will contribute to a successful season for the Gujarat Titans.

The IPL 2024 season will be an exciting opportunity for Gill to showcase his leadership skills and further establish himself as a prominent player in Indian cricket.
