Route 3 Shutdown in Billerica as Dashcam Footage Reveals Fuel Tanker Rollover Crash

Route 3 in Billerica, Massachusetts will remain closed in both directions for an indefinite period of time after a tanker truck carrying a large amount of fuel crashed on Wednesday morning, according to state police. The accident occurred on the northbound side of the highway, just after Exit 76 and before Exit 79. Emergency responders discovered a tanker that had rolled over and spilled fuel, with the truck leaking fuel from the top of its tank. Hazmat and environmental response teams were dispatched to the scene to address the situation. The exact duration of the closure is unknown at this time. State police confirmed that multiple vehicles were involved in the crash. Footage shared by Boston 25 News captured the moment when the tanker tipped over and slid down the highway, eventually coming to a stop with its cab facing south. A witness’s dashcam video revealed that a white GMC Sierra collided with a white Tesla Model Y SUV, causing the pickup truck to spin across the road and crash into the tanker. As a result, the tanker flipped onto its side, resulting in the fuel spill and subsequent closure of the entire highway. The drivers of the tanker and one of the other vehicles incurred minor injuries. Another video shared by a passing motorist showcased fuel pouring out of the tanker and debris strewn across the roadway. The Billerica Police Department announced that all northbound and southbound lanes between the Route 129 and Treble Cove Road exits are currently closed, along with the ramps from Interstate 495 north and south to Route 3 south. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation confirmed the existence of a northbound detour at Exit 76 and a southbound detour at Exit 79. The duration of the cleanup efforts remains uncertain, and motorists are advised to avoid the area until further notice. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
