Russia has significantly increased its military presence around the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine and has shifted from a defensive stance to taking “active actions,” according to a Ukrainian military commander. Bakhmut, which was captured by Russia in May, has been the site of intense fighting during the 20-month war. Ukraine has been on the offensive since June, aiming to retake occupied territories in the south and east, including Bakhmut.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of the ground forces, stated on Telegram messenger that the enemy has strengthened its forces in the Bakhmut area and has transitioned to offensive operations. He described the situation as difficult, with Russian forces particularly active near the northeastern Ukrainian-held town of Kupiansk. According to Syrskyi, Moscow’s troops are attempting to advance in multiple directions simultaneously, resulting in heavy losses for the Russian side.
However, Reuters could not independently verify the claims made by the Ukrainian military commander or the details of the battlefield account. In the daily report on the conflict, the Ukrainian General Staff stated that Russian forces continued their efforts to regain control over Andriivka, located south of Bakhmut. Ukrainian forces claimed to have retaken Andriivka in September. The report also mentioned that Ukrainian troops have been conducting their own offensive operations south of Bakhmut, inflicting losses on the enemy in terms of manpower and equipment.
In addition to their activities in Bakhmut, Russia has been pushing to encircle and capture the town of Avdiivka in the east in recent weeks. The situation remains tense, with both sides engaged in ongoing hostilities. The news was reported by Yuliia Dysa, with editing by Tom Balmforth and Ed Osmond.
