Shashi Tharoor shares his response to Bill Gates and Narayana Murthy’s proposal on the work week

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has responded to the recent suggestions made by Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates regarding work productivity and the future of jobs.

Narayana Murthy proposed that Indian youth should work 70 hours per week in order to boost the country’s overall work productivity and economy. While some, including JSW Chairman Sajjan Jindal, supported this idea, others raised concerns about the potential negative health effects and sustainability of such long working hours.

On the other hand, Bill Gates recently discussed the positive side of artificial intelligence and its potential to free up labor for more meaningful work. He even mentioned the possibility of a three-day work week in the future. Gates made these remarks during an episode of Trevor Noah’s “What Now?” podcast.

In response to these views, Shashi Tharoor took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “Bill Gates says a three-day work-week ought to be possible. In other words, if Mr. Gates and Mr. Narayana Murthy sit down together and work out a compromise, we will end up exactly where we are, with a five-day work week!”

Tharoor’s post received various reactions from internet users. One user humorously suggested that if Elon Musk joins the discussion, the average work week might extend to 10 days. Another user supported the idea of a four-day work week, stating that it would lead to better productivity and employee satisfaction. Yet another user acknowledged that both Murthy and Gates have valid points, emphasizing the importance of well-organized work and context in determining the appropriate work schedule.

Overall, these suggestions from prominent tech leaders have sparked a debate about work-life balance, productivity, and the future of jobs.
