Sri Lanka Chief Selector Alleges World Cup Conspiracy

Sri Lanka’s Chief Selector, Pramodaya Wickramasinghe, has claimed that the national cricket team’s poor performance in the ongoing ODI World Cup is a result of a conspiracy from outside sources. The team returned home on Friday morning after suffering a five-wicket loss to New Zealand in their last group stage match in Bengaluru, India. Wickramasinghe, a member of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning team, stated that he needs two days to reveal the details of the conspiracy.

Expressing his disappointment, Wickramasinghe said, “It is very sad, I am taking responsibility,” during a press conference at the airport. Sri Lanka’s performance in this World Cup has been their worst since 1992, with only two wins out of nine games.

The team faced several challenges, including a series of injuries that required replacements from outside the original squad. This even led to a change in captaincy during the tournament. Their dismal performance against India, where they were all out for just 56 runs, sparked criticism back home.

The sports minister responded by firing the governing body, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), which was later reinstated by the court of appeal, further exacerbating the crisis. On Thursday, a joint resolution from the government and opposition in parliament demanded the resignation of the SLC management.

The government, which is divided over the minister’s decision to dismiss the SLC board, released a report recommending a new constitution for the governing body, including a new voting structure for appointing office bearers.
