The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has been restored after a court order suspended the operation of the Gazette appointing an interim committee to take control of the board. The interim committee, led by 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga, was established by Sri Lanka Sports Minister Roshan Ranasingha. However, the Court of Appeal issued an interim order in response to a writ petition brought by SLC President Shammi Silva, challenging the decision to dissolve the board and form the interim committee. The court order is valid for 14 days.
Earlier, Minister Ranasingha suspended the entire Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board and appointed an Interim Committee, chaired by Arjuna Ranatunga. The committee consists of seven members, including a retired Supreme Court judge and a former board president.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe was reportedly not informed about the suspension of the cricket board and the appointment of the interim committee until he saw it in the news. He expressed concern about politicizing the board and warned that it could result in Sri Lanka losing its membership in the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The decision to restore the board comes after Sri Lanka’s humiliating 302-run loss to India in the World Cup. The team currently stands at number 8 in the standings, having lost 6 out of the 8 matches they have played in the tournament.
