Srinagar College Student Faces Charges Over Controversial Social Media Post

A student from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar has been charged for posting a controversial message on social media, which is said to have offended religious sentiments. The post, shared by a non-local student on Tuesday, led to widespread protests in colleges across the city.

The police have taken note of the incident and have filed charges against the student for uploading sensitive content that hurt the religious feelings of a particular community. The Srinagar Police stated, “Upon receiving information from NIT authorities, a case has been registered under FIR No.156/23 u/s 295A, 153A, 153 IPC at PS Nigeen on 28.11.23.”

The police also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading rumors or false information and urged them not to be influenced by the propaganda of anti-social elements. They warned that legal action would be taken against anyone involved in provocative acts or incitement.

To prevent further protests, heavy security measures were implemented in and around the NIT campus, and academic activities were temporarily suspended. The NIT students initially took to the streets on Tuesday, demanding action against the accused. Today, protests spread to other colleges in the city. It has been reported that officials have instructed several colleges to suspend academic activities for a few days due to the escalating tension caused by the controversial social media post.
