Supreme Court Rebukes Calcutta High Court Over Controversial “Control Sexual Urge” Guidance

The Supreme Court has criticized the Calcutta High Court’s advice to young girls to “control sexual urge” and not indulge in “two minutes of pleasure.” The Supreme Court bench issued a notice to the West Bengal government and other parties, stating that judges are not expected to express personal views or preach. The Supreme Court labeled the Calcutta High Court’s comments as objectionable and unwarranted.

In October, the Calcutta High Court made the controversial observation that every female adolescent should control their sexual urges as they would be considered losers in society if they indulge in sexual pleasure for just two minutes. The high court emphasized the duty of young girls to protect their body integrity, dignity, and self-worth. It also called on boys to respect girls’ dignity and train their minds to respect women.

The Calcutta High Court’s ruling overturned the verdict of the sessions court and advocated for comprehensive sex education in schools to prevent legal complications arising from sexual relations at a young age. The Supreme Court’s strong criticism of the high court’s comments highlights the importance of impartiality and refraining from personal opinions in judicial proceedings.
