Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s New Asset, Dubbed a ‘Money-Printing Machine,’ Surpasses Expectations with Ahead-of-Schedule Opening

Tesla’s lithium refinery, referred to as a “money-printing machine” by Elon Musk, is set to debut earlier than expected and may also expand its operations. The primary objective of the plant is to produce lithium hydroxide for Tesla’s battery cell production at the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. Additionally, it aims to showcase Tesla’s cost-effective processing system, which could potentially become an industry standard if successful, revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) industry once again.

Initially, Musk had announced that the plant would have the capacity to produce enough lithium to support the manufacturing of approximately 1 million EVs annually. With an investment of $365 million, Tesla plans to hire around 165 full-time employees for the facility.

Previously, Tesla projected the start of production in 2025, following the completion of construction in 2024. However, the timeline has been accelerated, according to Jason Bevan, Tesla’s senior manager of operations. Bevan stated that production may commence as early as next year, with the commissioning of assets beginning in the first half of the year and production ramping up in the latter half.

Moreover, Bevan hinted at potential future expansion of the facility beyond the initial two trains. Tesla owns suitable property for expansion, offering opportunities for further economic impact and job creation.

Tesla’s investment in advanced technologies like lithium processing is a positive development for the environment. Streamlining EV production and sales contributes to reducing carbon pollution. Gasoline-powered cars, on average, emit over 10,000 pounds of carbon pollution annually, whereas EVs have significantly smaller carbon footprints. Expanding the availability of EVs through initiatives like the lithium refinery aligns with efforts to combat climate change.
