A baby at the center of a legal battle in the UK has passed away, according to Christian Concern, a group supporting the baby’s family. The 8-month-old, named Indi Gregory, had been suffering from mitochondrial disease, which caused brain damage. Her doctors recommended removing her life support to allow her to die peacefully in a hospital or hospice. However, her parents, Dean Gregory and Claire Staniforth, fought to keep her on life support, hoping that experimental treatments could prolong her life. The Italian government also sought permission for her to be treated at a children’s hospital in Rome and even granted her Italian citizenship. Despite the parents’ objections, British judges upheld the doctors’ recommendations, stating that the child’s best interests were the priority. This case highlights the ongoing legal disputes between parents and doctors in the UK regarding the treatment of terminally ill children. In response to the complex situation, Court of Appeal Justice Peter Jackson criticized what he referred to as “manipulative litigation tactics” aimed at frustrating court orders.
