Uniqlo Takes Legal Action Against Shein for Popularity of Replica Shoulder Bags

Uniqlo, a subsidiary of Fast Retailing Co., has filed a lawsuit against Shein in Japan, accusing the Chinese retailer of copying its popular Round Mini Shoulder bag. Fast Retailing stated on Tuesday that Shein must immediately stop selling “imitation products” and provide compensation for damages.

The Round Mini Shoulder bag, which is sold for approximately ¥1,500 ($10) in Japan, has gained worldwide popularity. Uniqlo has been cautioning consumers about counterfeit versions and similar products being sold online. Fast Retailing is now following in the footsteps of rival company Hennes & Mauritz AB by suing Shein for copyright infringement in Hong Kong. This litigation has been ongoing since 2021 and aims to mitigate the threat posed by the Chinese competitor.

Shein, originally founded in China and now based in Singapore, has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the lawsuit. Uniqlo filed the complaint against Roadget Business Pte, Fashion Choice Pte., and Shein Japan Co. on December 28, 2023, at the Tokyo District Court.

In their statement, Fast Retailing explained, “The company filed this complaint because it has determined that the form of the imitation products sold by Shein closely resembles that of its own product. The sale of the imitation products by Shein significantly undermines the high level of customer confidence in the quality of the Uniqlo brand and its products.”
