Unless Tests Indicate Otherwise, Heikki Kovalainen’s Heart Will Be Stopped

Heikki Kovalainen, a racing driver, is likely to undergo open-heart surgery after an enlarged aorta was discovered during a routine health check in November. Kovalainen, 42, was surprised by the discovery, but remained calm and saw it as an opportunity to prepare and plan the next steps. He has consulted with about ten Finnish and foreign cardiologists or surgeons, who all agreed that his aorta has expanded to the point where surgery is necessary.

Although there is no immediate need for the surgery, Kovalainen would have to avoid physically demanding activities if he opted not to have it. The risk of aortic rupture is also significantly higher with an enlarged aorta, which can often be fatal. The open-heart surgery, known as David’s procedure, has a good prognosis with a success rate of around 95–96%. Kovalainen plans to have the surgery in Finland due to the high-quality heart surgery expertise available there.

Recovery from the surgery would likely mean that Kovalainen would have to take a break from his racing career. He was set to defend the Japanese rally championship and participate in a few European and World Series asphalt rallies. However, his teams are aware of his situation and there is no pressure for a hasty return.

Kovalainen and his wife, Catherine, have taken the news in stride, relieved that the condition was discovered and can be treated. They are now preparing for the surgery and the recovery period that follows.
