US Launches Airstrikes on Iranian-Backed Militants in Syria, Responding to Assaults Targeting American Soldiers

The Pentagon and U.S. officials have confirmed that the U.S. military conducted airstrikes on two locations in eastern Syria, targeting Iranian-backed groups. The strikes hit a training location and a weapons facility, marking the third retaliatory action by the U.S. in just over two weeks. These airstrikes were in response to an increasing number of attacks on bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin released a statement emphasizing the importance of protecting U.S. personnel. He stated that the President’s highest priority is the safety of U.S. personnel, and the action was taken to demonstrate that the United States will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests.

One of the targeted sites also included a weapons storage facility, according to an anonymous U.S. official. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the operational details.

The militant groups responsible for the attacks in Iraq and Syria, many of whom are affiliated with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, have carried out nearly 50 attacks since October 17. These attacks have prompted the U.S. to take action.

The October 17th attack on a Gaza hospital, which resulted in numerous casualties and triggered protests in Muslim nations, led to Israeli military retaliation against Gaza. In response to the U.S. support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas, several groups have vowed retaliation against the U.S.

As per the Pentagon, approximately 56 U.S. personnel have been injured in the attacks in Syria and Iraq. However, all of them have recovered and returned to duty. The injuries sustained include traumatic brain injuries and other minor wounds.
