Croatia’s top tennis sensation, Donna Vekic, demonstrated her prowess on the court by emerging victorious in the 1st round of the WTA tournament held in the bustling city of San Diego, USA. She dominated the game against Katherine Hui, clinching the match with a score of 7-5, 6-2.
Despite the ranking difference, with Vekić standing at 28th in the WTA and Hui at a distant 872nd, the match lasted a gripping 90 minutes. Vekic, hailing from Osijek, faced a bit of turbulence in the first set, squandering a 5-2 lead. However, the second set saw her recover swiftly. She lost her serve twice, but adeptly compensated by snatching the opponent’s opening shot each time, ultimately sealing the set and the match at a triumphant 6-2.
Vekic’s performance was marked by two ace serves and six double faults, with her first serve interceptions in the match standing at 52 percent. Her next challenge in the second round of the tournament is against Marina Stakušić, the Canadian player currently ranked as the 283rd best female player in the world.
