Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar: Parliament Resistant to Interference from Executive and Judiciary

The Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has emphasized the supremacy of Parliament and stated that it is not subject to intervention from the executive or judiciary. Speaking at a Constitution Day event, Dhankhar suggested the establishment of a structured interaction mechanism between the three branches of government to prevent issues from becoming public disputes. He stressed the importance of collaboration and discourse among the executive, judiciary, and legislature for the country’s growth. Dhankhar also highlighted that the Supreme Court cannot create laws for Parliament, and the legislature cannot write judgments for the apex court. He stated that any encroachment into the exclusive domain of Parliament would be a constitutional aberration. Dhankhar called for a convergence of attitudes among the institutions and urged the resolution of differences through statesmanship rather than public posturing. He expressed his satisfaction with the current leaders of these institutions and proposed a system for resolving public complaints through structured interaction. Dhankhar further emphasized the need for MPs and MLAs to prioritize debate, dialogue, and discussion over disturbance and disruptions. He described the Emergency imposed in 1975 as the darkest period in independent India’s history and highlighted the significance of the Constitution except during that time. Dhankhar also mentioned the abrogation of Article 370, which accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir, as a tribute to B R Ambedkar. He criticized the critics of the government who engage in tarnishing and demeaning the country’s institutions whenever something positive happens. Constitution Day is observed on November 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1949.
