Harrdy Sandhu, who is now a popular entertainer, recently revealed an interesting incident from his past cricket career that has caught the attention of the internet. Sandhu, who had a brief stint as a cricketer and represented India in the under-19 cricket team, shared the reasons behind his non-selection for the Indian ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2006 squad.
In an interview on the podcast ‘Figuring Out With Raj Shamani’, Sandhu disclosed that during the team’s preparation for the 2006 World Cup in Sri Lanka, a training camp was organized in Pune. This camp brought together 30 talented cricketers from across the country, and each player was scheduled to participate in three matches. The final team for the World Cup would be selected based on the performances in these matches, as evaluated by the selectors and the coach.
Sandhu spoke about his remarkable performance during the camp, particularly in his first match, where he managed to dismiss notable cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Pinal Shah, and Yo Mahesh. This impressive display of skills made Sandhu believe that he was on his way to securing a spot in the Under-19 team for the upcoming World Cup.
However, despite his outstanding performance, Sandhu was ultimately not selected for the final team. He attributed one potential reason for his exclusion to a misunderstanding that occurred during the camp. Sandhu asked Rahul Sharma, a former India and Punjab spinner, for a bat and referred to him as ‘Venky’. Coincidentally, Venkatesh Prasad, who was the coach, was sitting in front of Sandhu and mistakenly thought he was being addressed. Sandhu speculated that this incident may have influenced Prasad’s decision to stick with the same squad that had played in the previous two U-19 tournaments.
