Staff at The Washington Post, one of America’s renowned newspapers, will be going on strike for 24 hours on Thursday, according to their union. The staff is expressing their disappointment with the company’s refusal to negotiate a contract in good faith. The strike comes after 18 months of unsuccessful discussions regarding pay, remote work, and other working conditions. The newspaper, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has also warned of potential layoffs.
Labor unions have been gaining momentum in the tight labor market in the United States. In recent months, various groups, ranging from Hollywood writers and actors to auto workers and baristas, have taken their grievances to the picket line.
The Washington Post Guild, in a letter to readers announcing the strike, stated that the decision was not made lightly. The guild accuses management of repeatedly refusing to bargain in good faith and illegally shutting down negotiations on key issues such as pay, mental health support, and buyouts. They argue that without a fair deal, the newspaper cannot remain competitive, retain top talent, or produce the high-quality journalism that readers rely on.
The Post Guild represents approximately 1,000 staff members, including both newsroom and commercial employees. In October, a Post report indicated plans for 240 voluntary buyouts, suggesting that the company had around 2,500 employees. The New York Times reported that over 700 members have signed the strike pledge.
Traditional US media outlets have faced challenges in recent years as readers increasingly turn to social media platforms and advertising revenues decline. This strike at The Washington Post follows a previous strike at Gannett, America’s largest newspaper publisher, earlier this year, as well as a 24-hour action by New York Times staff a year ago. Last month, workers at the Associated Press staged a “short break” to protest their lack of a contract, with their guild rejecting a two percent raise offered by management.
