Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated sci-fi epic, “Rebel Moon,” is set to release in theaters on December 15 before streaming on Netflix on December 22. The film, with a budget of over $160 million, has been in development for more than 20 years and is the result of Snyder’s original concept of “The Dirty Dozen in space.” Initially, Snyder considered making the film a part of the “Star Wars” franchise, but ultimately decided to create a unique universe.
“Rebel Moon” follows a group of space-traveling revolutionaries as they unite against the oppressive Motherworld empire. Led by former Motherworld soldier Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, the rebels face overwhelming odds in their fight for freedom. The film draws inspiration from various cinematic influences, including “Seven Samurai,” “Heavy Metal,” “Dune,” and, of course, “Star Wars.”
The first installment of the two-part saga, titled “Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire,” takes place on the distant moon Veldt. Kora, who witnessed the murder of her family and destruction of her home world by imperial forces, has grown weary of the Motherworld’s violence. However, when Admiral Noble, played by Ed Skrein, arrives on Veldt to seize control of its resources, Kora must rally a group of allies to protect her settlement and fight back against the empire.
The second film, “Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver,” will focus on Kora and her allies as they wage war against the Motherworld. Director Zack Snyder describes it as a “war movie” with intense battles and further exploration of Kora’s backstory and her nickname, Scargiver.
Sofia Boutella, who plays Kora, reveals that the second film will unveil a significant revelation about her character, which took some time for her to understand and empathize with. She hopes that the audience will react with compassion and forgiveness when they learn the truth about Kora.
“Rebel Moon” promises to be an action-packed space opera that combines elements from various genres and delivers an exciting and visually stunning cinematic experience. Fans can look forward to the first chapter releasing in December, with the second part scheduled for April 2024.
