India Keeps Close Watch on Respiratory Illness Outbreak in China

The Health Ministry of India has stated that it is closely monitoring the outbreak of respiratory illnesses in children and cases of H9N2 (Avian influenza virus) in northern China. However, the ministry has assured that there is a low risk to India from both the avian influenza cases and the respiratory illness clusters in China.

In a release, the Union ministry stated, “India is prepared for any kind of exigency that may emerge from the current situation.” They further added that the respiratory illness in children in China is attributed to usual causes and no unusual pathogen or unexpected clinical manifestations have been identified.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has conducted an overall risk assessment, which indicates a low probability of human-to-human transmission and low case fatality rate among H9N2 cases reported to the WHO so far. The statement emphasized the need for enhanced surveillance among human, animal husbandry, and wildlife sectors, as well as improved coordination.

India is adopting a One Health approach to address health issues holistically and effectively. The country has significantly improved its health infrastructure, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. The PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) is developing capacities of health systems and institutions at all levels, from primary to tertiary care, to ensure preparedness for future pandemics or disasters.

In response to China reporting a human case of H9N2 to the WHO, the Directorate General of Health Services in India chaired a meeting to discuss preparedness against human cases of Avian Influenza in the country. Meanwhile, the UN health agency has officially requested Beijing for more data regarding the outbreak but has not received any public comment from the Chinese government as of now.
