Indian-Origin Student in Critical Condition After Brutal Assault in Australia: Report

An Indian-origin student in Australia is currently in a medically induced coma after being assaulted, and a suspect has been arrested and charged with criminal assault, according to a media report. The student, who remains unidentified, is in his 20s and is studying for a master’s degree at the University of Tasmania.

The incident occurred on November 5 at a location in Tasmania, and the victim suffered extradural bleeding, which resulted in his brain shifting, as reported by the Sydney-based Special Broadcasting Service. In addition, his right lung collapsed, leading to a lengthy brain surgery.

Following the assault, Benjamin Dodge Collings, a 25-year-old resident of Lenah Valley, was apprehended by the police and charged with criminal assault. This offense carries a maximum prison sentence of 21 years. Collings was granted bail by a magistrate and is scheduled to appear in court on December 4 to answer the charges, which include assault, providing false information, resisting arrest, and unrelated driving offenses.

The University of Tasmania is aware of the incident, according to Ben Wild, the institution’s Media Director. However, due to the ongoing legal proceedings, he stated that they are limited in what they can disclose.
