Supreme Court’s Mitti Cafe Receives Unexpected Visitor

New Delhi: On the occasion of Constitution Day, Kalpana Das, the wife of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, made a surprise visit to Mitti Cafe located at the Supreme Court of India. This visit took place after the unveiling of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s statue on the court premises. The cafe, which is run by specially-abled staff, had the honor of hosting Ms. Das.

During her visit, Ms. Das interacted with the cafe staff and shared her experience of inaugurating the Mitti Cafe at Delhi University’s prestigious Hansraj College. She made purchases at the newly built cafe and promised to visit again for a cup of coffee.

Constitution Day was also marked by the unveiling of a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar by President Droupadi Murmu on the Supreme Court premises. Chief Justice Of India DY Chandrachud and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal paid their respects to the father of the Indian Constitution by offering flowers to the over 7-foot tall sculpture. President Murmu and Chief Justice Chandrachud also planted saplings as part of the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized the importance of the Constitution in resolving various disputes, not just political ones. He highlighted the trust that people have in the Supreme Court, as they have been writing letters seeking justice for even basic necessities like clean water and air.

The Mitti Cafe initiative, supported by Chief Justice Chandrachud and other Supreme Court judges, was also mentioned. The cafe, which provides employment opportunities to persons with disabilities, was inaugurated earlier this month. The initiative is run by an NGO that works with persons with disabilities and has created job opportunities for them since 2017. Currently, there are 35 such cafes operating in India, including one at Bangalore Airport.

The visit of Chief Justice Chandrachud’s wife to Mitti Cafe serves as a testament to the success and impact of this initiative in supporting persons with disabilities and providing them with meaningful employment opportunities.
