Shubman Gill Thrilled to be Named Captain of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024
Shubman Gill, one of India’s rising cricket stars, expressed his joy after being appointed as the captain of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans for the upcoming 2024 season. Following the departure of the former captain, who returned to Mumbai Indians, the “Little Prince” of Ahmedabad was given the responsibility of leading the team. Gill expressed his pride in assuming the captaincy and thanked the franchise for placing their trust in him. He took to X to share his excitement, stating, “I am proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and I cannot thank the franchise enough for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. Let’s make it memorable! To all the fans… #AavaDe.”
Gill has established himself as a formidable batsman, accumulating 1373 runs in 33 innings at an impressive average of 47.34. He has scored three centuries and eight fifties throughout his IPL career. The previous season was particularly exceptional for him as he smashed 890 runs in 17 matches, with an average of 59.33. He also recorded three centuries and four fifties, earning him the title of the Orange Cap winner.
In addition, Gill played a pivotal role in Gujarat Titans’ remarkable journey since their debut in the IPL. In the previous season, he showcased his batting prowess by scoring 129 runs off just 60 balls against Mumbai Indians, the highest individual score in an IPL playoff match. Gill expressed his delight and pride in leading the team, emphasizing their exciting brand of cricket. He said, “I am delighted and proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons, and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket.”
After clinching the IPL title in their debut season in 2022, Gujarat Titans reached the finals in the subsequent season, narrowly losing to Chennai Super Kings. Gill’s outstanding performance in the IPL is highlighted by his three centuries, a feat achieved by only two other players in a single season – Virat Kohli in 2016 and Jos Buttler in 2022, who both scored four centuries each.
The departure of Hardik Pandya, an experienced all-rounder, to Mumbai Indians could prove to be a significant loss for Gujarat Titans. Under his leadership, the team lifted the IPL trophy in their debut season and secured a spot in the finals in the following season, albeit falling short against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings.
The announcement of Shubman Gill as the captain of Gujarat Titans has generated excitement among fans and cricket enthusiasts alike. As the IPL 2024 season approaches, all eyes will be on Gill as he leads his team with determination and strives to achieve further success in the tournament.
