The proposal for a 58-cent increase in the broadcasting fee by the KEF from 2025 has been declined by Brandenburg’s Media State Secretary Benjamin Grimm (SPD) and a majority of the Potsdam state parliament, even before its official announcement.
Mayor Wegner’s Disapproval
Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner (SPD), expressed his disagreement with the increase shortly after the KEF announcement. He questioned the need for continuous hike in broadcasting fees and urged public broadcasters to propose potential savings.
It’s notable that both governments supporting the Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) are in complete dissent to the contribution increase. This isn’t the case with any other multi-national broadcaster on ARD – NDR, MDR and SWR. Thus, the RBB lacks political support.
The residents of Brandenburg have more grievances than those of Berlin. They felt neglected in the RBB programs since its inception in 2003, leading to demands for exclusive Brandenburg TV and RBB TV hours. This, however, requires additional funding which is often overlooked.
The RBB, a result of the merger of ORB and SFB, has its own set of admirers. Individual programs and shows have a dedicated fanbase, for instance, Radio Eins and “Abendschau”. However, it’s difficult to love an institution as a whole.
The public broadcaster runs six radio programs with varying degrees of success. Kulturradio has been revamped to such an extent that it will be relaunched as radio3. The RBB television works on a tight budget, broadcasting mainly during non-peak hours. There are questions about the content when extra shifts are scheduled for Berlin and Brandenburg.
The RBB continues to exist, primarily maintaining tradition rather than producing standout broadcasts. It spends around 450 million euros annually on its operations and programming. Despite a scandal, the unchanged broadcasting of RBB may be seen as a sign of disinterest or powerlessness by its financiers. This facilitates broadcasting politicians to implement their program ideas – a questionable measure of love for the RBB.
