A man in New York has been arrested after shooting three teenagers who were inside a stolen car belonging to his relative. The incident took place in northern Syracuse on November 5, and the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Michael Brown, fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities. Brown now faces multiple charges including attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal use of a firearm.
The incident unfolded when police responded to a ShotSpotter notification, which detects gunshots, in the area just before 11 p.m. Officers were then approached by individuals in a Hyundai, which had been reported stolen earlier that night. Inside the vehicle, they discovered two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old, all of whom had sustained gunshot wounds.
The 16-year-old suffered critical injuries to her arm and midsection and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The two 14-year-olds were also injured, one in the hip and the other in the leg, but their injuries were not life-threatening.
According to officials, Brown is related to the owner of the stolen Hyundai. He managed to track down the car and found it occupied by several juveniles. During an interaction with them, Brown opened fire, striking the three teenagers.
As of November 6, the 16-year-old victim remained in critical condition. The Syracuse Police Department has not released any further updates on her condition.
This incident adds to a series of recent crimes involving stolen vehicles. In Oklahoma, a mother confronted car thieves who then proceeded to steal her SUV with her five children inside. In Florida, neighbors detained a suspected truck thief at gunpoint when he attempted to flee a traffic stop. Additionally, a 64-year-old food delivery driver was shot multiple times during a carjacking in Pennsylvania, and an 18-year-old accidentally shot himself while trying to escape after breaking into a car in Texas.
