The U.S. Air Force’s new B-21 Raider, the world’s second stealth bomber, has successfully completed its maiden flight. The aircraft was spotted taking off from the Air Force’s Plant 42 in California, accompanied by an F-16 chase plane. It has since headed to Edwards Air Force Base for formal flight testing. The B-21 Raider is designed to provide long-range, penetrating strike capabilities to deter aggression and strategic attacks against the United States and its allies. It is expected to replace the Air Force’s B-2 and B-1 bombers in the mid-2020s. The aircraft is multi-functional, capable of gathering intel and handling battle management. It is also a part of the wider Long Range Strike Family of Systems, which includes the long-range stand-off nuclear-armed cruise missile. The B-21 Raider is likely to leverage developments from the Next Generation Air Dominance initiative, including the acquisition of highly autonomous drones. More details about the aircraft’s capabilities are expected to emerge as flight testing continues.
