The battle over a historic mansion in Kansas City is far from over. Brothers Steven and Matthew Vawter are once again seeking permission to demolish their 110-year-old Classical Revival home after it was designated as historic against their will by the Kansas City City Council. The Vawters have been in conflict with their neighbors who believe the mansion should be preserved. The City Council agreed with the neighbors, placing the home on the Kansas City Register of Historic Places. The Vawters are now going before the Kansas City Historic Preservation Commission to obtain a “certificate of appropriateness” to demolish the house. If granted, they plan to sell the property for commercial development. However, neighbors have urged the Vawters to sell the house on the residential market for an alternative use, such as a boutique hotel. The Vawters argue that the house is not salable as it is outdated and requires extensive repairs. The hearing before the Historic Preservation Commission is scheduled for Thursday.
