High-ranking Army Officer’s Bold Statement Shakes Up Military Community

The head of the Army’s eastern command, Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Kalita, has stated that the situation in Manipur requires a political solution. Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Kalita explained that the sporadic violence in the northeastern state is a result of the sharp polarization between the Kuki and Meitei communities. He emphasized the need for a political resolution to address the ongoing problems in Manipur.

Kalita also highlighted the issue of looted weapons, with over 4,000 still in the possession of the people. These weapons are being used in acts of violence, exacerbating the situation in the state.

The general’s remarks come amidst a 48-hour shutdown in Kangpokpi district in protest against the killing of a security personnel and his driver. The Committee on Tribal Unity, which called for the shutdown, accused valley-based insurgent groups of carrying out the killings. During the shutdown, markets remained closed, vehicles stayed off the roads, and there was low attendance at government offices and educational institutions.

Since May, the violence in Manipur has claimed the lives of over 180 people. The conflict began when the Meitei community demanded Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, which was opposed by the tribal population, including the Nagas and Kukis. The Meiteis make up 53% of Manipur’s population and reside in the Imphal Valley, while the Tribals constitute 40% of the population and predominantly live in the hills.
