A senior doctor from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences has addressed the rising cases of respiratory illness in China, stating that viral infections are common during the winter season and there is no indication of another pandemic like COVID-19. Reports have shown a significant increase in respiratory infections, especially among children in northern China in recent weeks. Dr. SK Kabra, the Head of Department at AIIMS, explained that the reports from China indicate a sudden rise in respiratory infections caused by common viruses such as Mycoplasma, influenza, adenovirus, and others. There is no evidence of any new or unusual viruses. Dr. Kabra emphasized that it is difficult to determine if these infections can lead to a pandemic similar to COVID-19. He also mentioned that the strict lockdown imposed in China may have contributed to the increase in respiratory illness cases. Dr. Kabra advised people to practice good hygiene, use sanitizers, and avoid sending children outside if they have an infection. He assured that the situation in China is not a cause for concern as India has already faced similar challenges and is now better equipped to manage such situations. The Ministry has instructed doctors to investigate any abnormal cases and report them for appropriate action.
