“Almost Friends” by Ghini and Ruffini Conquer Italy

The adaptation of the French comedy, “Almost Friends,” done in the Italian theatrical style, has been a hit across the peninsula. Alberto Ferrari’s rendition has proven successful in its second season, selling out in numerous theaters all over the country from North to South. This success can be attributed to the irresistible comedic talent of Paolo Ruffini and the powerful performance by Massimo Ghini, who plays the character of a quadriplegic protagonist.

In the early months of 2024, the show has been played in around fifteen theaters, including notable ones like Manzoni in Milan and Parioli in Rome. Everywhere it has been showcased, it has received positive reviews and strong reception. The tour continues with performances scheduled in Civitavecchia and Gaeta on Tuesday, 5th March.

The show then travels to Puglia, with performances in Gioia del Colle on Saturday, 9th March, and Canosa on Sunday, 10th March. This is followed by performances in Campania, between Portici, Arzano, and Castellammare from 13th to 17th March, before circling back to the North. Performances are scheduled in Carate Brianza on 20th March, Ostiglia in the Mantua area on 21st March, San Dona’ di Piave in the Venetian area on 22nd March, Prato on 23rd and 24th March, Viareggio on 25th March, and Sassuolo on 26th March. In April, between 9th and 14th, the show will be staged in Monfalcone and Trieste.

“Almost Friends” is actually a theatrical adaptation of the second most-watched French film of all time. The original film, created by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, is a blend of light-hearted moments and serious reflections on the human condition and disability. The adaptation maintains the essence of the original while injecting an Italian flavor, especially in the comedic elements. It tells the story of Filippo, a wealthy, cultured, intelligent, but narcissistic character, played by Massimo Ghini. After becoming a quadriplegic due to a paragliding accident, Filippo’s life is transformed by the unexpected entry of Driss, a former prisoner from the suburbs played by Paolo Ruffini.

The encounter between Filippo and Driss brings a sense of lightness and madness to Filippo’s life and provides Driss with a newfound balance. The supporting cast, including Claudia Campolongo, Francesca Giovannetti, Leonardo Ghini, Gianmarco Trulli, Giulia Sessich, and Diego Sebastian Misasi, also deliver stellar performances, enhancing the overall appeal of the show.
