Angelo Mathews Creates History with Bizarre Dismissal at Cricket World Cup
In a surprising turn of events at the Cricket World Cup 2023, Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews made history by being ruled ‘timed out’ during his team’s crucial match against Bangladesh in Delhi on Monday. The incident occurred during the second ball of the 25th over, bowled by Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan. It happened soon after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed, and Mathews entered the crease as the fourth wicket fell.
However, confusion arose when Mathews realized that he had brought the wrong helmet. He desperately pleaded with the Bangladesh players and the umpires to allow him to rectify his mistake. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan substitute quickly fetched the correct helmet. Unfortunately for Mathews, by the time he had the right gear, Bangladesh had already appealed for a ‘timed out’ dismissal.
According to the MCC rules, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
However, the playing conditions for the Cricket World Cup 2023 state that “Incoming batters are expected to be ready within 120 seconds (2 minutes). If they are late, they will be out – Timed out.”
“This is the first time I have ever witnessed something like this,” commented former Sri Lankan cricketer Russel Arnold while doing commentary on the incident.
This unusual dismissal has created quite a buzz in the cricketing world, marking a historic moment in the Cricket World Cup. The match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh continues, and more updates are expected to follow.
