Centre Official Sets 2-15 Days Timeline for Ongoing Tunnel Rescue Operation

Forty-one workers who have been trapped in a tunnel in Uttarakhand for 10 days may be rescued within the next two days using a drilling machine, according to a senior government official. However, if the drilling machine fails, the rescue operation could extend to 15 days.

The workers have been stuck in the 4.5-kilometer tunnel since it collapsed on November 12. They have been receiving food, water, and medicine through steel pipes.

Anurag Jain, the Secretary of Road Transport and Highways, stated that the American-made Auger drilling machine is currently the best option for the rescue. He mentioned that the workers could be freed within 2.5 days if the machine works effectively. However, on Friday afternoon, the machine encountered a hard boulder, causing vibrations that led to a temporary halt in the operation due to safety concerns.

Mr. Jain added that they have prepared five alternative plans, which could take up to 12-15 days to execute.

Authorities provided a 30-second video showing a group of trapped men standing in the tunnel, wearing helmets and construction worker jackets. The men appeared to be in good condition, responding positively to questions about their well-being.

The rescue operation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as they become available.
