Cyclone Michaung Weakens into Deep Depression over Andhra Pradesh Coast

Cyclone Michaung has weakened into a deep depression over the central coastal region of Andhra Pradesh, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday. The cyclonic storm, previously known as Michaung, is now located around 100 kilometers north-northwest of Bapatla and 50 kilometers southeast of Khammam. According to IMD’s social media post, the system is expected to further weaken into a depression within the next six hours and eventually into a well-marked low-pressure area in the subsequent six hours.

The landfall of Cyclone Michaung on Tuesday resulted in heavy rain in Chennai, although its intensity had significantly decreased from the previous day. The incessant downpour caused flooding, bringing the state capital to a standstill and causing casualties and property damage.

The Greater Chennai police reported 17 deaths due to floods caused by the cyclone. Among these incidents were ten cases of drowning and electrocution, for which medical help was provided. Kanimozhi, a DMK MP, acknowledged the severity of the situation and praised the government’s response, stating that more than 400 relief shelters had been set up and evacuation measures were carried out. Efforts were made to pump out water from affected areas, and power was restored to a majority of households.
