Ethics Panel Report Reveals Startling Findings

Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra has been found guilty of accepting gifts and bribes, including a cash amount of Rs 2 crore, from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to ask critical questions about the Narendra Modi government in Parliament. The Ethics Committee, in its 500-page report, stated that Moitra’s actions constituted “serious misdemeanours” that called for severe punishment. The report quoted Hiranandani’s statement, which detailed the luxury items and support provided to Moitra. The committee concluded that the allegations of accepting illegal gratification were clearly established and undeniable, and that this behavior was unbecoming of an MP and unethical.

As a result, the Ethics Committee recommended the expulsion of Mahua Moitra from the membership of the Seventeenth Lok Sabha and called for a legal institutional inquiry by the government due to her unethical and criminal conduct. Further action against Moitra has been referred to investigative agencies with expertise in probing the money trail. However, the committee acknowledged its lack of technical capabilities to investigate the money trail and deemed it the task of the central government.

The report’s tabling in the Lok Sabha triggered a row between the ruling BJP and the opposition, who demanded a detailed discussion and a division of votes on the issue. The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm, when the motion to expel Moitra is expected to be tabled. Given the BJP’s overwhelming majority, the motion is likely to pass.

Moitra, who has denied the allegations, also faced accusations of surrendering her parliamentary log-in credentials to Hiranandani. She admitted to doing so but argued that it was a common practice among MPs.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also the Trinamool boss, accused the BJP of planning Moitra’s expulsion. However, she believed that this move would benefit Moitra ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Investigative agencies will now conduct a time-bound inquiry into the matter to uncover the money trail.
