In a recent interview, former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann highlighted a torn-up note as evidence of former President Donald Trump’s intent to overturn the 2020 election results. The note, written by Trump aide Jonny McEntee, mentioned that Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller had spoken to U.S. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and U.S. Army Chief of Staff James McConville, and predicted that no further statements would be issued. However, McEntee added that if another statement were to occur, Miller would fire them.
The note, which had been reconstructed, was presented as part of the House Jan. 6 Committee’s investigation into the Capitol riot. It is now featured in ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl’s book titled “Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party.”
During an interview on MSNBC, Nicolle Wallace asked Weissmann if the note accurately reflected Trump’s intentions for the military. Weissmann responded, “Absolutely.” He emphasized that the military is committed to upholding the rule of law and the Constitution, and they understand that they cannot follow invalid orders. Weissmann expressed concern that if Trump were to win a second term, he would know how to exert his power effectively, having learned from his previous experiences.
Weissmann also commented on the incompetence of the Trump administration, citing the Muslim ban as an example. However, he suggested that a potential second term for Trump would be even more concerning, as he would have a better understanding of how to manipulate the levers of power.
The interview concluded with Weissmann expressing his belief that Karl’s book indicates that a future Trump presidency would be even more problematic than the previous one.
