Former US National Security Advisor (NSA), John Bolton, has acknowledged the growing significance of India to the United States, emphasizing the need for closer bilateral cooperation and recognizing India’s emerging global role. In an article for the Washington Examiner, Bolton highlighted the joint efforts of the US and India to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as evidence of India’s willingness to assert its influence on the global stage. The BRI, a massive infrastructure investment project by China, has raised concerns about its potential to expand Beijing’s economic and political influence across Asia and beyond.
Bolton stated, “India will undoubtedly play a crucial role in containing China’s hegemonic ambitions along its vast Indo-Pacific perimeter.” As the former NSA under President Donald Trump’s administration, Bolton also shed light on the ongoing case involving former Indian naval officers in Qatar. He noted that this case has brought India’s complex relationship with the Middle East to the forefront and showcased its willingness to collaborate on intelligence matters with countries beyond its traditional allies.
Bolton highlighted the potential strategic risks associated with a recent US loan of $553 million for a deepwater container terminal project in Colombo. However, he praised the involvement of the Adani Group in the project, stating that it exemplifies the leveraging of US-Indian resources for mutual benefit. Bolton also emphasized the importance of enhanced cooperation among the US’s Arab partners, asserting that a broader Indian role and partnership with the US on a global scale align with the shared national interests of both countries.
