The Berlin-based second division soccer team, Hertha BSC, has announced the early extension of their top scorer and fan favorite Fabian Reese’s contract. Reese, who is 26 years old, signed a new contract which will keep him at the club until 2028, extending his previous contract that was due to run until 2026. The announcement follows Reese’s impressive debut season with the club, having moved from Holstein Kiel to Hertha last summer. His consistent and exceptional performances have made him a standout player.
Reese, who plays as a fast wing player, has delivered an impressive performance this season with ten goals and 14 assists. His exceptional performance not only marks him as the most successful Hertha player of the season, but also places him among the top performers in the second division. However, his season was briefly interrupted from mid-December to the end of January due to a corona infection that resulted in poor blood values.
Sporting director at Hertha BSC, Benjamin Weber, has praised Reese as an invaluable asset to the team. “We know Fabi’s worth and value: he is an absolute key player for us and always leads the way both on and off the pitch with his inspiring nature. He fully aligns with Hertha BSC, our values, and our philosophy,” Weber said.
Reese has expressed his loyalty to the club by extending his contract, showing his belief in the club’s vision and goals. He was quoted in the press release as saying, “I want to set a precedent by extending my contract. I believe in the success and goals of our club and I want to help bring Hertha BSC back to where it belongs: in the Bundesliga.”
However, it should be noted that Reese’s contract extension does not guarantee his continuous presence in Berlin. The financial challenges that Hertha is currently facing could lead the club to rely on transfer proceeds in the summer. Reese’s exemplary performance has not gone unnoticed by Bundesliga clubs. It remains unknown whether his contract includes an exit clause, which could potentially facilitate his move to another club.
