Himanta Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, has issued a warning to Akbaruddin Owaisi over a video in which Owaisi allegedly threatened a police officer in Hyderabad. Sarma stated that if the incident had occurred in Assam, it would have been resolved within five minutes. He criticized the appeasement politics in Telangana and expressed concern that such behavior can make people feel threatened. Sarma has called on the Election Commission of India to cancel Owaisi’s candidature.
The incident involved Akbaruddin Owaisi, the brother of All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi. Akbaruddin was booked for openly threatening a police inspector who requested him to follow the model code of conduct for the assembly polls. The police have registered a case against Akbaruddin under section 353 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to obstructing official duties.
In response to the FIR filed against him, Akbaruddin denied the allegations and accused the police of lying. He claimed to have video footage showing a police officer coming onto the stage. Akbaruddin argued that while he could be held accountable for giving a speech after 10 pm, obstructing a public meeting and prematurely ending it was unjust. AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi also defended his brother’s remarks, stating that the police officer should not have intervened as there were only five minutes left for the campaign time to be over for the day.
Akbaruddin Owaisi is contesting from the Chandrayangutta constituency, which has been a stronghold of the AIMIM, with the party winning it in both the 2014 and 2018 elections. The state of Telangana will hold its polls in a single phase on November 30, with the counting of votes taking place on December 3.
