Irish Prime Minister Slams Israel’s Actions in Gaza as Revenge-Like

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has strongly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling it “something approaching revenge.” This marks one of the harshest criticisms of Israel by a leader of a European Union member state. According to Gaza health authorities, the death toll has reached 9,061 since Israel launched its assault on the enclave of 2.3 million people in response to attacks by Hamas militants. While Varadkar acknowledges Israel’s right to defend itself and go after Hamas, he believes that the current situation goes beyond self-defense and resembles revenge.

During a visit to South Korea, Varadkar expressed his concern, stating, “That’s not where we should be. And I don’t think that’s how Israel will guarantee future freedom and future security.” When asked if Israel’s actions could be considered war crimes, Varadkar declined to make a determination. Israel maintains that its actions are in accordance with international law and are aimed at targeting Hamas, which operates among the civilian population.

The conflict in Gaza has exposed divisions within the European Union regarding foreign policy. Countries such as France, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and Ireland have supported the United Nations’ call for a cease-fire due to humanitarian reasons. However, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria have resisted, arguing that a break in the conflict could hinder Israel’s ability to defend itself and allow Hamas to regroup.

Ireland has long been one of the most vocal critics of Israeli policies towards Palestinians in Western Europe. This statement from Varadkar reinforces Ireland’s stance against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
