IT Minister to Lead Crucial Meeting on Artificial Intelligence Technology Today

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology and Communications, is taking proactive measures to address the growing threat of deepfake technology. Today, he will chair a high-level meeting in New Delhi to discuss strategies and tackle the challenges posed by deepfake content. The meeting will be attended by Secretary MEITY, government officials, and cybersecurity experts.

This initiative comes after the Union Minister’s announcement on November 18, where he informed that notices had been issued to major social media platforms. These notices instructed the platforms to promptly identify and remove deepfake content.

During a media interaction on November 18, Vaishnaw highlighted the severity of the deepfake issue, stating, “Deepfake is a big issue for all of us.” He also acknowledged the responsiveness of social media platforms to the notices, commending their active steps in addressing the concern.

Furthermore, Vaishnaw urged social media platforms to adopt a more aggressive approach in combating deepfake content. He emphasized that the “Safe Harbour” Clause, which has traditionally protected social media platforms, may not apply if they fail to take adequate measures against deepfakes.

Today’s meeting, led by Ashwini Vaishnaw, will focus on comprehensive strategies to identify, combat, and remove deepfake content. This proactive approach by the government and engagement with social media platforms demonstrate a commitment to preserving the integrity of digital content and safeguarding citizens from the harmful effects of manipulated information.

The outcome of this meeting is expected to significantly contribute to the ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of deepfake content on online platforms.
