Former Illinois Representative Adam Kinzinger revealed in a CNN interview on Monday that he was disowned by his family after leaving Congress and losing the trust of Fox News host Sean Hannity. Kinzinger explained that his family sent him a certified letter disowning him, claiming that he had lost the trust of “great men” like Hannity and accusing him of being a member of the “devil’s army.”
Kinzinger, a prominent critic of former President Trump, cited his disagreements with the Republican Party as the reason for his decision to leave Congress. However, this move resulted in a barrage of death threats against him and his family. He shared the horrifying experiences of receiving calls in which people threatened to kill his 5-month-old child or wished for the child’s death.
The former congressman was promoting his new book, “Renegade,” which was released on Tuesday. During the interview, Kinzinger acknowledged that it is a difficult question whether he still considers himself a Republican. Nevertheless, he expressed his determination not to give up on fighting for a healthy Republican Party, as he believes the country needs both a healthy Democratic Party and a healthy Republican Party.
While Kinzinger still identifies as a Republican, he made a commitment to vote for President Biden if he were to face a rematch against Trump in the 2024 election. He argued that another term for Trump would lead to “authoritarianism” and warned about the potential for a second insurrection similar to the events of January 6, 2021. Kinzinger emphasized the importance of preserving democracy and the need to prevent further attacks on the system.
