Lucid, an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has unveiled its highly anticipated all-electric three-row SUV called the Gravity. This SUV boasts an impressive range that could potentially outperform competitors such as the Tesla Model X, Fisker Ocean, and Rivian R1S when it comes to charging time. The success and reception of the Lucid Gravity are crucial for the company, as its first EV, the Lucid Air sedan, has received positive reviews but has experienced a decline in demand this year. In order to regain its position in the increasingly competitive EV industry, Lucid must successfully launch the Gravity SUV. However, similar to its sedan, the production of the SUV has also been delayed. While the original plan was to start production in late 2023, it has now been pushed back to late 2024.
The Lucid Gravity is described by the company as the herald of a new era for electric SUVs. Its design features a low-slung body with a sporty tail, resulting in a coefficient of drag of 0.24. This aerodynamic design contributes to the vehicle’s impressive battery range. Lucid claims that the Gravity can go from zero to sixty in less than 3.5 seconds, slightly slower than Tesla’s Model X Plaid.
The SUV is equipped with a compact powertrain, EV motors, a 900-volt electrical architecture, and a payload capacity of over 1,500 pounds, along with an additional 6,000 pounds of towing capacity. Lucid estimates that the Gravity will have a range exceeding 440 miles, making it the longest-range electric SUV on the market. Additionally, the vehicle is said to have fast-charging capabilities, capable of adding 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes. The starting price for the seven-seater SUV is expected to be under $80,000, but additional features and trim levels may increase the price significantly.
Inside the Lucid Gravity, there is a 34-inch curved OLED screen that hovers above a redesigned steering wheel. The interior of the SUV features luxury touches, similar to the Lucid Air sedan. Notably, the vehicle offers a seven-passenger configuration with sliding second-row seats and integrated convenience tables, providing an enhanced back-seat experience. Both the second and third rows of seats can be folded flat, creating over 112 cubic feet of usable cargo space.
Overall, the Lucid Gravity represents a crucial step for Lucid in regaining its position in the EV market. The company’s success will heavily rely on the reception and performance of this new SUV.
