Around 3,500 individuals have embarked on a journey on foot from Tapachula, a city near the Guatemalan border in the southern state of Chiapas, according to officials. However, one of the organizers of the caravan, Irineo Mujica, claims that the group consists of approximately 5,000 people. The majority of the migrants in this latest caravan hail from Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela. As the migrants made their way along a coastal highway, they were accompanied by civil protection officials and ambulances. Their plan was to spend the night in Huehuetan, a municipality around 16 miles north of their starting point. Mujica explained that the decision to leave Tapachula was driven by the migrants’ frustration over their inability to obtain humanitarian visas. These individuals are fleeing their home countries due to factors such as poverty and political instability. Notably, this year has witnessed a surge in the number of people crossing the Darien Gap region, which connects Panama and Colombia.
