Massive ‘Never Again’ Rally: Tens of Thousands Stand in Solidarity with Israel in Washington

Supporters of Israel Gather in Massive Rally on National Mall

Tens of thousands of supporters of Israel gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, demonstrating their solidarity in the fight against Hamas and echoing the powerful phrase “never again.” The “March for Israel” served as a strong and bipartisan endorsement of one of the United States’ closest allies, as criticism against Israel’s offensive in Gaza continues to escalate following the violent Hamas incursion on October 7.

Underneath the projection of unity, however, Democrats remain deeply divided over Israel’s actions and its treatment of Palestinians. President Joe Biden, who initially expressed unwavering support for Israel in the war’s early weeks, is now urging restraint and calling on Israel to alleviate civilian suffering in Gaza.

During the rally, various speakers took to the stage to denounce the Hamas attack and condemn the international spread of antisemitism. Israeli President Isaac Herzog, addressing the crowd via video, described the recent events as “the largest massacre since the Holocaust” and urged the world to unite with the cry of “never again.”

Republican Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa emphasized the brutality of Hamas, stating that they murder babies, rape women, and abuse the elderly. She expressed her disbelief at anyone sympathizing with such terrorists.

The surprise incursion by Hamas militants on October 7 resulted in more than 1,200 deaths and over 200 hostages. In response, Israel launched a series of attacks in Gaza, resulting in over 11,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.

Rachel Goldberg, mother of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who was among the hostages taken by Hamas, spoke about the agonizing days since the attack. She questioned why individuals of various religions and backgrounds were being left underground in Gaza.

The “March for Israel” was designated a “level 1” security event by the Homeland Security Department, the highest classification used for major events like the Super Bowl. Law enforcement officials received a joint bulletin from the FBI and Homeland Security, warning of the potential for violence or attacks inspired by the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, no specific or actionable threat to the march was identified.

Many of the demonstrators at the rally proudly displayed Israeli flags around their shoulders or in their hands. Security measures were stringent, with dump trucks blocking access to the National Mall and police presence dispersed throughout the area, including officers on horseback.

Attendees expressed hope that the rally would demonstrate solidarity with Israel and raise awareness about the hostages currently in danger. While concerns about the death toll in Gaza and criticism of Israel’s military campaign were acknowledged, supporters emphasized that Israel was doing its best in the midst of a war it did not initiate.
